Many healthcare professionals are finding that the career they trained for may not provide opportunities for growth or a good income. The good news is there are several in-demand, healthcare jobs that require a two-year associate degree or less. So if you’re interested in making a career change in a short amount of time, here are 6 examples of popular healthcare-related jobs that don’t require a 4-year bachelor’s degree:

 

1.) Registered Nurse (RN)

If you want a career in healthcare with a lucrative salary, job security, and a variety of career advancement paths, becoming a registered nurse (RN) is a great choice. you’ll administer hands-on patient care in a variety of settings including hospitals, medical offices, nursing homes, and other facilities. And if you choose an associate degree in nursing, you can be finished in two years or less – though many people complete a four-year Bachelor of Science in a nursing program.

 

2.) Nursing Assistant

A nursing assistant works under the supervision of the nursing staff to provide basic care for patients in a variety of settings. Nursing assistants must complete a state-approved education program in which they learn the basic principles of nursing and complete supervised clinical practice. These programs are found in high schools, community colleges, vocational and technical schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

 

3.) Medical Assistant

Medical assistants play an important role in the modern healthcare industry – providing assistance to other professionals and attending to patients. A medical assistant generally graduates from a two-year associate degree program with a medical assistant major accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.

 

4.) Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers and health professionals. Responsibilities include maintaining patient profiles and prescription histories, creating prescription labels, preparing insurance claims, and maintaining accurate inventories. Having a higher level of education, such as completion of an accredited technician training program, will make you a more attractive job candidate, enable you to advance quicker, and help boost your pharmacy technician salary.

 

5.) Medical Billing and Coding

Billing and coding specialists assign diagnoses and procedure codes for patient visits and care that are used for accurate billing for those services. Patient information and treatment services are coded and categorized for insurance reimbursement. Billing and coders are the connection between healthcare providers and billing offices and must maintain accurate, accessible, and secure paper and electronic file systems. If you’re interested in joining the healthcare industry but don’t want to spend years in school, you can earn a diploma in about 14 months.

 

6.) Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA)

Physical therapist assistants are the healthcare professionals who help patients recover from injuries and illnesses that limit their mobility or cause pain in their everyday lives. To work as a physical therapist assistant you must graduate from a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education-accredited physical therapist assistant education program.  You’ll also need to pass a state-administered national exam to obtain the licensure or certification required in most states. The length of a PTA program is typically two years.
